TELL US WHAT TYRE YOU NEED
Do You know if You Need New Tyres? There are several key ways to tell when it's time to get new car tyres, and it's important to pay attention to these signs for safety and optimal performance. Here are some indicators to watch out for:
Tread depth: This is the most crucial factor. By law in the UK, your tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm. However, it is always recommend replacing them as early as 3mm or 2mm, depending on the source, for better grip and performance in wet and cold weather. You can easily check tread depth with a gauge or even a 20p coin: if the silver band around the edge disappears within the grooves, it's time for new tyres. Visible wear and tear: Look for uneven wear patterns, bulges, cuts, or cracks on the sidewalls. These can indicate internal damage or weakening, posing a safety risk and compromising handling. If you notice any such signs, get your tyres inspected by a professional immediately. Age: Even if your tread depth is still okay, tyres have a lifespan. Rubber hardens and degrades over time, compromising performance and grip, especially in colder temperatures. Most experts recommend replacing tyres no later than 5-6 years old, even if they haven't worn down significantly. Driving conditions: Your driving habits and environment can significantly impact tyre life. Aggressive driving, heavy loads, frequent city driving, (especially around the many roundabouts in Swindon) and extreme weather conditions will wear tyres faster. Performance issues: Do you notice a decrease in traction, hydroplaning in wet weather, or increased stopping distances? These could be signs of worn or damaged tyres. It's better to be safe than sorry. Bring them and we can check them for you. Professional inspection at PJS: A regular tyre check by one of our qualified mechanics is always recommended. We can spot hidden damage, assess tread depth accurately, and advise you on the best course of action. |
