Unlike most cars and vans that use timing belts, the Ford 1.0L EcoBoost engine introduced in 2012 uses a wet belt. This wet belt is located inside the engine and runs in the engine oil. Mostly found in the Fiesta, Focus, Transit Connect Van, and B-Max. It is recommended by Ford that you replace the wet belt every 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. It can also be noted that there are actually 2 x wet belts in these engines, Timing and Oil Pump Belt. However, PJS Autos of Swindon can tell you from experience, that it is never worth waiting until the 10 years or 150K Miles is up, as premature belt failures can occur. We would recommend changing it approx. every 8 years or 80,000 miles. Replacing the wet belt is a complex job that requires special tools and knowledge, all of which we have. It is not a recommended DIY task. |

1. Why does Ford recommend a 10-year interval when belts are failing much sooner?
While the official Ford service schedule often cites 10 years or 150,000 miles, real-world driving conditions—specifically short trips and infrequent oil changes—cause the belt to degrade much faster. At PJS Autos, we’ve seen significant "sludging" as early as 6 years. We recommend a professional inspection or replacement at 6 years or 60,000 miles to prevent catastrophic engine failure. 2. Can I just check the belt condition myself through the oil filler cap? Unfortunately, no. While you can see a small portion of the belt, you cannot see the teeth or the bottom pulley, which is where the rubber usually begins to delaminate. More importantly, you cannot see if the oil pickup strainer is already blocked with debris. Our specialist diagnostic involves a "sump-drop" inspection or a dedicated oil pressure test to ensure your engine's "veins" aren't already clogged. 3. 4. My oil pressure light flickered—is it too late for a belt replacement?
If the oil light flickers, the belt has likely already started to disintegrate, and debris is clogging the oil pump strainer. Do not continue to drive. At this stage, a simple belt swap isn't enough; the engine requires a deep-clean of the lubrication system. We specialize in "recovery services" where we clear the debris and restore oil flow, often saving the engine before the bearings seize. 5. Why is the EcoBoost wet belt replacement more expensive than a standard timing belt? Unlike traditional "dry" belts located outside the engine, the EcoBoost belt is internal and bathed in oil. Replacing it requires specialist timing tools, significant disassembly of the engine's front end, and a mandatory oil system flush. PJS Autos uses the exact Ford-specialist locking tools required to ensure the Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) units are aligned to a fraction of a millimetre—something many general garages cannot guarantee. 6. Can a failing wet belt actually ruin my turbocharger? Absolutely. This is one of the most common "hidden" costs of delaying a replacement. As the wet belt breaks down, tiny rubber particles circulate through the engine oil. These particles often find their way into the turbocharger oil feed pipe, which is incredibly narrow. Once that pipe is restricted, the turbo loses lubrication and can fail within miles. Just had my Ford Escort Ecoboost wet cam belt changed. The only firm that replied when I Googled my request. Very detailed quote, very competitive compared with the Ford Dealer and well worth travelling up from Somerset to have the work done. Everyone at PJS was friendly and helpful.
