Cambelts for vans and cars
What is a Cambelt?
Cambelts (also known as Timing Belts) are an extremely important part of any vehicle’s engine. Some vehicles such as Mercedes and BMW have timing chains. Both play the same role. The main differences are the material (one being metal the other rubber), and that timing belts are mostly housed outside the engine, whilst chains are often housed inside. The cambelt’s main role is to ensure that the crankshaft and camshaft rotate in synch. A smooth operating cambelt will ensure smooth and efficient operating of a vehicle’s engine. What are the signs that a cambelt needs replacing? As part of general car maintenance, it is always sensible to have a professional motor technician to periodically check your cambelt. It is not always very easy to identify exactly when a cambelt needs replacing nor is there often any warning! You can check your vehicle's manual for guidance or specific information specific to your vehicle. One thing that could suggest a cambelt change is required such as an unusual noise from the engine (a tapping or knocking noise). What can happen if a cambelt breaks? It can be very dangerous if a cambelt breaks/snaps whilst driving. So, before this is allowed to happen, it is advisable to not ignore any noises coming from the engine. The worst is that damage can be caused to the engine which if seized up can result in steering and braking failing issues. If the engine does fail as a result of the cambelt breaking, the repair costs can be very expensive. How much does it cost to replace a cambelt?
The parts and labour will vary from vehicle to vehicle.. Most often the cambelt comes with a water pump kit. The main reason for this is that in order to get to the water pump the technician need to in most cases remove the cambelt.
