Clutches for vans and cars

What is a Clutch?
A clutch in a car is a part which links the engine and transmission.  It transfers power from the engine to the wheels in a manual vehicle.  The type of clutch varies from vehicle to vehicle.

How can the life of a clutch be preserved?
There are many things that can help preserve the life of a clutch.  A clutch can last from anything between 20,000 to 150,000 miles.  Some things that can help preserve the life of a clutch can include (RAC guidelines):
  • Do not hold the clutch down on a hill.
  • Do not leave the vehicle in gear if in traffic or at a red traffic light.
  • Rest your hand on the gearstick.
  • Do not floor the accelerator when revs are low.
  • Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal.
  • Do not coast in neutral to save fuel.
  • Do not release the clutch too soon.

When should you worry about your clutch?
If you experience squeaking noise when changing gears, difficulty in changing gears, or if you have any issues with the clutch pedal, such as it feeling; sticky, vibrating, loose, or even spongey.

Is it okay to drive with a bad clutch?
Driving with a suspected bad clutch can be dangerous.  If you have any concerns, please contact us and we will check the clutch and your vehicle, make a proper diagnosis and make an repair recommendations if any are required.

How long should a clutch last?
Approximately 60,000 miles.  However, some may only last 30,000 miles.  Driving behaviour can play a very important part in how long a clutch may last.

Why is it expensive to replace a clutch?
Replacing a clutch is a highly labour-intensive job.  This is because to replace the clutch, the transmission must be removed and the clutch dissembled.  Then any damaged or worn parts will need replacing.  Depending on the make and model of the vehicle, the time required to replace a clutch and/or components can take up to anything from 2 to 6 hours.
If you have any concerns about the condition of your clutch, please contact us so that we can take a look and give you the best possible advice.
